For the first time since the expansion was announced, Portland’s WNBA team will have a real life announcement, one that fans can attend in person and hear and see for themselves.

Around 4:00PM PST on Tuesday, July 8th, the Portland WNBA Instagram account posted the following image, announcing a Launch Party for the team at their future venue, the Moda Center.

The text of the post reads:“You’re part of this team’s story from the very beginning — and we want you there for this unforgettable milestone.

Join us at the @moda_center on Tuesday, July 15 for the Launch Party, a free, family-friendly event celebrating the official unveiling of our team’s name and brand.

Expect an afternoon full of energy, community, and your first chance to grab official team merch — plus music, special appearances, and fun activations for fans of all ages.

History doesn’t just happen — we show up and make it.

I’ve gotta say, since my expectations for the immediate future of this franchise are pretty low (see: this post I made yesterday), I was surprised to see that an exciting event was coming our way in just one week. Of course they were going to have a public event like this; every sports team does. But this franchise has not done what typical franchises do, so far, so my radar for a possible event was turned off.

I’ll just go ahead and say it: I’m fucking excited!

It is easy to get down on things when we don’t have any information. But, as I mentioned in my conclusion of yesterday’s post: we don’t need or have to worry about what the business operators are doing behind the scenes. Are their actions critical to our fan experience? Of course. Do we need to track them and worry about them like we track and worry about a player on a cold streak: no!

I will absolutely be there next Tuesday, July 15th. I hope to see you there! Please let me know if you will be attending. I will take photos, maybe some videos, and I’ll write up a recap of my experience hopefully immediately after the event.

If you want a sneak peak of the action, and the information that will be shared, I have a source that says some of the day’s announcements will be shown on ABC’s Good Morning America that morning. Tune in!

I have a currently rising interest in doing what I can, with what I have, to be helpful to people in my community who are under specific, targeted distress. I don’t have much free time, and I don’t have much extra money, but I do have enough of both to send some dollars towards two companies who aim to support immigrants and refugees:

Since 2005, PIRC has demonstrated its ability to mobilize large numbers of people, provide crucial services during critical moments (like ICE raids), and adapt its structure to meet evolving needs.

The current focus on achieving organizational independence while maintaining and expanding services reflects PIRC's commitment to long-term sustainability and increased impact in the immigrant rights landscape.

Our Mission

To welcome, serve, and empower refugees, immigrants, and people across cultures and generations to reach their full potential.

Our Vision

A future where refugees and immigrants belong, our staff are nurtured, and all communities thrive.

There are many reasons to celebrate and grow our differing local communities, but other communities need action and support instead. I think we have the capacity for both.

Thank you, as always, for reading. I hope to see you at the Moda Center! Please reach out if you are attending!
