The Fire have made another free agent signing, addressing the need everyone saw after the expansion draft, by signing Megan Gustafson, a Wisconsin-born 6’4” big who won the WNBA Championship with Las Vegas last season.

Another signing, another clear sign of valuing previous relationships. Megan Gustafson, like Karlie Samuelson yesterday, was also a part of the 2023-2024 London Lions that won a championship with Fire GM Vajna Cernevic and assistant coach Alex Sarama. Gustafson was named Finals MVP in the series.
More recently, in 2025, Gustafson suffered a lower leg injury just before games began, playing just 20 games. But those 20 games were at the end of the season, when the entire Aces team really clicked, got hot, and rode a wave all the way to a Championship sweep.
Gustafson averaged just 11 minutes, 3 points, 2 rebounds, and less than half of most other stats per game. She shot mostly 3-pointers, an attribute that seems highly valued by this Fire front office.
This time, upon signing, we have contract information: Gustafson signs a two-year deal worth $500k this season and $525 next season, which is about 42% of the maximum contract and 42% higher than the minimum. In other words, it’s a lower value contract, signaling to me that Gustafson is not the primary solution to their roster building problem of finding a starting-level big.
But they now have a veteran at the position in Gustafson, one who has won it all with this front office in London, and one who has won it all in this league several months ago. That experience is worthwhile, and is a trait that the Fire don’t have much of.
It’s a quality, if not wow-ing, signing. That’s 2 value signings, no mega-signings.
We’ll see what the rest of the pre-season brings, including the College Draft tomorrow!
