The first women’s professional basketball game in Portland in over 23 years is scheduled for May 3rd at 4:00PM PST.
That is 81 days from today, when the Portland Fire announced their pre-season schedule (two games, one in Seattle, one at home).
While it is thrilling to have the first potential action set in front of us, and set place to happen so soon, it is important to remember:
the Fire have no players yet
the Fire have no way to acquire players yet
the expansion draft, in which Portland will theoretically acquire most of it’s roster1, is not yet scheduled
WNBA Free Agency, in which Portland could sign any player not currently under contract, is not yet scheduled
the future Fire players do not yet have an official facility to practice in
Allow yourself to get excited, and arm yourself with the knowledge that these dates could change.
Personally, I am considering them very likely to change.
I’ll see you again when there’s more news.
1 we don’t have details on the expansion draft, or how many players Portland and Toronto will be selecting
